Posted on July 8, 2015

Mayor David Corkum and members of Town Council welcomed Burton Russell and Gordon Whiteway to the most recent Council Meeting on June 15th, 2015 to receive a special presentation. Mayor Corkum introduced Mr. Russell, noting that following many years as a coach, mentor, sports author and participant in sports-related functions, Burton Russell has been named to the Maritime Sports Hall of Fame.  He was congratulated by the Town and presented with a print of the Town in acknowledgement of his achievements.

Burton Russell is well-known throughout the community, having attended KCA and Acadia University, prior to attending Dalhousie. For the last 25 years of his career, he taught English and coached sports at Kings County Academy.  He is the author of 11 books on Maritime sports history; is currently the official statistician of the Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League; and enjoys a diverse interest in culture, education and sports.  He is what many refer to, as a “man for all seasons.”

Mr. Russell thanked the Town for the honour of being asked to come for the presentation.  He gave a brief history of his career and noted that the presentation “will be one of the highlights of [my] life”.
