The Calkin Building, at 36 and 38 Cornwallis Street, and 2 Webster Street, was gifted to the Town of Kentville in 2016 by the Calkin family. The Town has worked to turn this into a thriving space for businesses and residents, including the creation of a community space at 38 Cornwallis Street. As the three-season home of the Kentville Farmers Market on Wednesdays (summers in Centre Square), this space is perfect for business meetings, receptions, small parties, and workshops.
The Community Room has street-level access between Hill’s Grills Panini Press and Tea House, and the Hardware Gallery. The main space is around 1000 square feet, and there is a back area of around 200 square feet (up three steps). The back of the room consists of accessible, shared washrooms for all three units (cafe, gallery and community space). The front of the space has a large window with a shade for light control and/or privacy. There is also a separate commercial kitchen with oven, sink, fridges and countertops for preparing foods, and this space is rented separately. Chairs and tables can be set up for different activities.
Rental fee for this space is $25/hour, with a non profit rate of $12.50/hour. Market kitchen rental fee is $30/hour.
