From September 27 to Treaty Day on October 1, 2021, Kentville invites you to take a reflective walk on the Harvest Moon Trail.  Learn a little bit about the Treaties between the Nova Scotia Government and the Mi'kmaq people, and think about a specific idea or topic.

You can start your walk at Eaves Hollow (near the border between Kentville and New Minas), or you can start on the trail at the corner of Leverett Avenue and Klondyke Street.

Map of the Harvest Moon Trail, from Leverett Road to Eaves Hollow

You will find the following panels along the trail:

Walk panels - 1

Walk panels - 2  Walk panels - 3

Walk panels - 4  Walk panels - 4

Panel 1:

When the English arrived in Mi’kma’ki, the Mi’kmaq and the Crown signed treaties of peace and friendship so they could live in harmony and peace. Mi’kma’ki is the Mi’kmaq homeland that includes present-day Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, central and eastern New Brunswick, the Gaspe Peninsula and Newfoundland.

The 1752 Treaty showed the Crown’s intentions to make peace, provide trading posts, and protect the land and way of life for the Mi’kmaw people. The Treaty also designated October 1st as the date on which the Mi’kmaw people would receive gifts from the Crown to “renew their friendship and submissions.”

We encourage you to walk along this path, read the panels to learn more about treaties, and think about your relationship with the treaties, the Mi'kmaq and this community.  We are all treaty people.

Panel 2:

From the Treaty: “...the Tribe shall use their utmost endeavours to bring in the other Indians to Renew and Ratify this Peace...”

Something to think about:  What do peace and friendship mean to you?

Panel 3:

From the Treaty: “...the Tribe shall not be hindered from, but have free liberty of Hunting & Fishing as usual...and have free liberty to bring for Sale to Halifax or any other Settlement within this Province...”

Something to think about:  What are some ingredients for a successful long term relationship?

Panel 4:

From the Treaty: “... a Quantity of Bread, Flour, & such other Provisions as can be procured, necessary for the Familys, and proportionable to the number of the said Indians, shall be given them half yearly for the time to come...”

Something to think about:  What is your role in reconciliation?

Panel 5:

From the Treaty: “... that the said Indians shall upon the first day of October Yearly, so long as they shall Continue in Friendship, Receive Presents of Blankets, Tobacco, and some Powder & Shot...”

Something to think about:  What is your community's role in reconciliation?
