Kentville Celebrates Dual Wins at the 2024 RNS Awards for Environmental Stewardship and Community Inclusivity!

Kentville, NS – The Town of Kentville is thrilled to announce two prestigious recognitions at the 2024 Recreation Nova Scotia (RNS) Awards, celebrating both environmental conservation and community inclusivity.

Connecting People with Nature Award: Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Project

The Hemlock Woolly Adelgid project proudly received the Connecting People with Nature Award. This impactful initiative was spearheaded by Tom Herman, Peter Hicklenton, and Ken Harrison, dedciating five weeks and over 100 volunteer hours to combat the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid species, preserving the hemlock trees in the Gorge. With a team of volunteers, over 2,000 hemlock trees were inventoried, marking a significant step toward protecting this essential ecosystem for future generations. A special thank you to Donna Crossland.

The Town of Kentville is committed to continuing this critical work over the next decade to ensure the Eastern Hemlocks thrive.

Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (EDIA) Award: Neighbourhood Outreach Program

Additionally, Kentville’s Neighbourhood Outreach Program Coordinator was recognized with the EDIA Award for outstanding efforts in promoting diversity and inclusivity. Through initiatives such as the Municipal Mosaic Panel, Oakdene Park Community Garden Group, and the Diversity and Belonging Task Force, this role has fostered strong partnerships with community leaders, non-profits, and government organizations to build a more resilient and inclusive community.
