FOR IMMEDIATE RELASE
June 1, 2026, Kentville, NS - Town of Kentville is deeply disappointed by the decision of the Annapolis Valley Regional Library (AVRL) Board to close the Kentville Library in July 2026.
Due to a lack of provincial funding for libraries in the valley region, AVRL has stated they cannot continue to operate all the libraries currently managed by the Board. The decision is particularly disappointing given that the Kentville Library is the largest and most used branch within the AVRL network.
For many residents, the Kentville Library is more than just a place to borrow books. It serves as a vital community gathering space, providing access to learning opportunities, technology, programming, and important social connections for people of all ages. With the closure scheduled for July 2026, residents and regular users of the library will now be required to travel approximately 20 minutes outside of town to access the next closest public library branch. Although the NSCC Kingstec Library does provide physical book borrowing services to the public, it does not allow public use of computers, provide digital or electronic access to literature or other resources, or deliver programming.
Prior to the announcement of AVRL’s decision, Kentville Town Council and administration had begun reviewing potential options for an improved library space or a new more accessible location. This work included exploring possible infrastructure improvements at the current location as well as considering alternative locations within the town that may have better met AVRL’s operational requirements. Unfortunately, the final decision to close the branch was made before these options could be fully explored and evaluated. Town of Kentville was not provided any reasons for why Kentville was one of the five branches selected for closure.
Mayor Zebian expressed disappointment and frustration on behalf of Council and the Kentville community.
“Kentville Library has long been an important and heavily used public service for our residents and the greater Kings County population that it serves. While we understand the challenges identified by AVRL, we are disappointed that more time was not provided to fully examine possible solutions that could have allowed library services to remain in Kentville. Even with the challenges our current physical location presented, Kentville Library is still the most heavily used. The number of people who will be directly impacted by this closure is great. Other libraries that do not serve near as many people will remain open. It’s a difficult decision to understand.”
Town of Kentville extends its gratitude to the staff, volunteers, patrons, and community members who have supported and contributed to the success of the Kentville Library over the years. Council will continue to work with community partners to understand the impact this decision will have on residents while short-term solutions are sought and long-term plans for providing library services in Kentville are developed.
AVRL has stated that Kentville Library’s last day of service to Kentville and area will be July 19, 2026.
