The Town of Kentville wishes to remind business and property owners located in the C1 Zone (downtown) about their responsibilities around sidewalk clearing. This friendly message is intended to help inform or remind property owners about their responsibilities related to sidewalk clearing, so that we can all work together in order to provide the safest, most pleasant experience for visitors to Kentville this winter season.
As per the streets bylaw, Chapter 83, all property owners with buildings adjacent to the sidewalk are responsible for clearing snow from that sidewalk within 4 hours of a snowfall. If the snow is still falling after 2:00 pm on any given day, it is acceptable for property owners to wait until the AM to have the snow cleared from the sidewalk, but it must be done before 10:00 am.
Town crews assist downtown property owners with sidewalk snow clearing efforts by providing a single pass with the sidewalk machine. This pass by the town is a courtesy meant to help business and property owners with their sidewalk snow and ice clearing efforts, but is not meant to replace those efforts altogether. Business and property owners should push snow all the way into the parking lane when possible, and town crews will remove it from there. Rows of snow left behind along the curb are not ideal, especially for people with mobility issues. When snow is not removed all the way to the curb, customers who park street side then have to jump over snowbanks to get to your business!
We thank you in advance for doing your part to keep Kentville a welcoming destination during the winter season, and maintain that famous Kentville standard!
Parties interested in viewing the streets bylaw in it's entirety can do so here.
