DOWNTOWN SIDEWALK REPLACEMENT PROJECT
Work to replace sidewalks in Kentville's downtown core started in the Spring of 2024 and phase 2 began in April 2025. The project includes sidewalk replacement on Aberdeen Street, Webster Street, Main Street, and some work on Bridge.
Main Street - work ongoing:
- The total work area includes the south side of the sidewalk from the intersection at Aberdeen and Main all the way to the intersection of Prospect and Main.
- Work required on this section includes replacement of underground pipes in addition to replacement of the curb and sidewalks
- This job is difficult to execute in this location due to the nature of the work, the location of a pinch point in the work area near the clock, and pre-existing underground power and communication lines running heavily through and around the site.
- Some delay to traffic movement is expected during this job, with main street being reduced to one lane from Aberdeen to Church on many days.
- Alternatives to on street parking are shown on the parking map. We encourage and recommend that people use the large lot in the north end of downtown located at 87 Bridge Street (behind the Kentville Justice Centre).
- Unofficial detour route: If you are headed from West to East using main street and your final destination is NOT downtown, we encourage you to go around downtown instead of through. Exit Park Street by Memorial Park and use Glenview Ave. to access Academy St. and Prospect and back to Main, easily avoiding the construction zone altogether. If you miss Glenview, School Street (near the post office) can be used the same way.
- On Thursday November 27th through Saturday November 29th crews will be preparing for final paving. Traffic interruptions will be minimal at most times during these three days. It is still an active construction site so please be prepared for reduced speeds.
- *****Paving is planned for Sunday November 30th. During paving, we expect significant traffic delays as it is necessary to reduce to one lane, stop-and-go. Crews are pushing hard to be able to execute paving on Sunday to mitigate the traffic impacts. Please note that there are a variety of potential factors that could cause a change to this plan. This page will be updated as we have more information. *****
Updates will be added to this page as we have them available. We understand there will be some unavoidable disruption as we work through this considerable project in the downtown business district. We appreciate cooperation and patience from our downtown operators, vehicular travellers, and visitors, as we complete this important work to make our downtown more accessible and better for everyone.
Business operators and property owners with questions or concerns can also contact the Town directly as required.
